Tiles: How are Italian tiles better?

The quality of tiles you use makes or breaks the design of your home, as they define the look and feel of your space, and are very hard to change later on. So it makes sense to spend a little more on great design and quality tiles, while budget can be saved on other things.

In tile shops in e.g. Wanchai and Mongkok, typically you find 3 price ranges: pricey European tiles, low-cost China tiles, and mid-range pretend-to-be Italian tiles that are made in China (they are more common than genuine European tiles!). With 1-2 pieces of samples, these "Chinese Italian" tiles can look pretty good on the surface, but the difference becomes evident when they actually cover your floor.

Number of Variations

High quality European tiles come with 40-60+ variations for each pattern, vs typically 8-20+ for Chinese products. With any space over 100 sq ft, the many different faces and variations of the same wood, stone and marble pattern give a much more realistic and natural look, while repetitive patterns make them look more artificial.

European tile brands invest significant resources in research and design to produce excellent replicas of natural materials, to the point where even expert eyes cannot immediately tell the difference.

Longevity

European tiles are highly resistant to wear and tear, scratching, staining, chipping, and breaking, thanks to much higher density, with patterns baked in 3,000-4,000 °C.

They are virtually unbreakable - I remember a friend dropping a bottle of magnum on a China floor tile - the tile cracked but the bottle was still intact. Italian tiles are very hard to break, even for construction workers.

They are also longer lasting, and do not bend with time, esp. elongated and narrow floor tiles, where made in China tiles are prone to bend with time and temperature changes. European tiles, as already evident from their thickness and weight, are built to last and worth the modest premium at Ideali's prices.
